Liam
Breandán de Frinse was born
in Belfast in 1949 Liam studied art under John Luke while serving an
indentured apprenticeship at Harland and Wolff's shipyard. After taking
degrees at Queens University of Belfast he lectured in Political Science
there for a time before devoting himself full-time to art. A major turning
point occurred in the early 1990s with the establishment of a studio in
Switzerland where his work is widely known and where he now spends part of
each year. Liam also works out of his studio in Belfast.
2004,
Liam spent time in the Kingdom of Kerry, where he completed the longest
line drawing in the whole of Ireland in collaboration with the
international renowned Danish based artist Doris Bloom. A documentary
feature has been made of the whole event. Liam also had a successful solo
with The Tom Caldwell Gallery Belfast. A documentary entitled 'Portrait of
the Artist' was made and broadcasted by NvTv in Belfast.
2005,
Liam is the only artist in Ireland invited to show with Paola Trevisan
Contemporary Art in Ferrara/Italy. Out of the 40 International Artists
invited to participate in this prestigious exhibition Liam received the
Ercole Este Prize for his contribution to international art.
Liam
has been invited back to the Cill Rialaig Project in Kerry to part take in
a performance celebrating mid summers eve entitled,’ Many hands make
light work'. And in October, Liam will be showing his new multimedia show
entitled 'Crows and Roses -The Parliament of Crows' with the Jaffa
Foundation in conjunction with the Naughton Gallery at the Festival at
Queens University Belfast. In July 2006 another show will take place in
the Palace of Wells Bath, entitled 'Ring a Ring of Rosies'.
Liam
has travelled and exhibited widely in Ireland, the UK, France, America and
Switzerland. He will shortly
be traveling to Asia to research new work.
He has received a number of awards in recognition of his
outstanding talents. His work
forms part of corporate and private collections worldwide.
In 1993 he was nominated for the Turner prize. In1997 he represented Ireland at the international Celtic
festival in Lorient. And
March 2005, Liam won the Ercole
