New
Work by Ana Duncan
The
multitude of forms and patterns found in the natural world are a source of
inspiration from my new work.
From corals
and jellyfish to seeds and pods, I study these forms to see how they
influence, and are mirrored in our man-made world. This is an unending
pursuit that
continually opens up new avenues to explore.
I
manipulate the clay pulling, pushing and finding new forms in a manner
akin to a speeded up evolutionary process creating for a yet unknown
environment.
Once
a piece has been created in clay, the process of making the piece in clay
begins. I enjoy the physical process of making of the bronze sculpture. I
make a mould from the clay original and take a wax copy from the mould.
This wax copy is then meticulously worked to ensure that the form created
in clay is preserved, free from any inperfections in the mould. This
allows me to maintain control over every piece. The wax pieces are taken
to the foundry where they are cast in bronze using the ancient lost wax
process. The patina of the
bronze is carefully chosen to ensure a unity of form and pattern.
