Artists Statement

Leah's current work concerns the surrounding landscape and environmental effects in both rural and urban contexts; the soft rain masking the hills which creates a delicate composition, compared to the defined structure of a cityscape; the muted colours of a winter landscape weighed against the rich colours of the bog in summer.

Although the subject matter can be recognised as 'landscape', it has an abstract quality to it. Aerial views mixed with head on perspectives. The basic elements of the 'landscape' are broken down into more simplified forms; natural occurrences such as land, sea, lakes, rivers, and human additions to the landscape such as buildings, roads, telegraph poles etc. From here these components take on a life of their own through experimentation and manipulation of paint. The process usually involves working on a number of paintings at the same time. This allows the creation of a series of works based on a certain experience or inspired by particular events.
