Markus started his ceramic education in the 80's in Germany. He graduated in 1992 with a Master’s Degree in Ceramic Design from the Cardiff Institute of Higher Education (now the Cardiff Metropolitan University). In 1993 he moved to Ireland to lecture at the Crawford College of Art and Design in Cork. In 2008 he moved to Kenmare where he opened his studio in 2012.
Markus has a background in figurative sculpture with a particular focus on surface texture and shape. He has returned to working on the wheel and is exploring thrown porcelain. His experiments with fluting techniques are resulting in dynamic surfaces and shapes. In contrast the smooth and finely thrown porcelain forms are of almost minimalist nature. These elegant shapes reveal the delicacy and translucency of the material. His addition of wood contrasts and complements the colours and surface qualities of his work.
