In this day-long workshop, ceramicist Jane Seymour shares her personal techniques for surface decoration in ceramics. Participants will work with slab-built forms and plaques, using both natural references and individual design ideas to explore drawing, sgraffito, slip application, and more.

Ideal for those with a basic experience of ceramics to practising ceramic artists, who wish to explore different techniques in surface decoration, through drawing,  inscribing onto clay slabs, scraffito, and oxide application.

  • Dust mask (All other materials provided. Fired pieces can be collected later by arrangement.)

Workshop Schedule

Time Activity

10:00 – 10:30 Welcome, registration, studio tour, safety briefing

10:30 – 11:30 Demonstration: Surface decoration techniques; Q&A

11:30 – 11:45 Coffee break

11:45 – 13:00 Hands-on: Make and design slab-built vessels

13:00 – 14:00 Lunch (simple vegetarian meal in the garden)

14:00 – 16:00 Hands-on: Decoration on plaques using sgraffito, texture, oxides, slips, stains

16:00 – 16:30 Tea and cake break

16:30 – 17:30 Finalise work, group discussion, Q&A

  This workshop promises a creative, relaxed atmosphere and hands-on experience in a beautiful rural studio setting.
