Jonny is a Belfast-based artist known for his cool, predominantly abstract acrylic paintings on canvas. His work evokes the spirit of Irish landscapes—boglands, beaches, urban spaces, and distant horizons—through a distinctive and atmospheric style.Born in Enniskillen in 1966, McEwen began painting in 1986 and graduated from the Belfast College of Art. Since his first exhibition in 1991, he has shown work extensively across Ireland, the UK, and Germany, including three solo exhibitions. His paintings are held in numerous public collections, including UTV, the Department of Environment (NI), the Secretary of State’s Office, the Office of Public Works, and the University of Cork, as well as in many private collections.Following travels in Eastern and Central Europe, McEwen returned to Northern Ireland in 1997, where he initiated an artist-in-residence program at the Corrymeela Centre in Ballycastle. He now works from his studio in Belfast. He is a recipient of the Caffrey’s “New Art of the Irish” award, and his work was recently featured in the touring Iontasexhibition and group shows at Gormley’s Gallery and Mill Cove Gallery.
