Dickie James makes handmade figurative ceramics from his home studio in Belfast. His work is inspired by images of masculine ideals. He sculpts original works and also uses his own plaster press-moulds to make the sportsmen, wrestlers and sailors that are his common themes.

Originally from Essex, he moved to Northern Ireland in 2013 and reignited his love for ceramics at the University of Ulster. After posting to Instagram in 2017, his ceramics found an audience and during the pandemic began to sell his work online. Since then, his ceramics have been bought by collectors across the UK and Ireland, Europe, US, Canada and Australia.

He was first introduced to ceramics as a teenager at Billericay School in Essex where he fell in love working with clay. However, his career path took him into the field of Animation where he would learn skills that would inform his ceramics work. Life drawing and sketching has helped him better observe movement, weight and character in his work. He gets inspiration from vintage sports images, fashion and Queer history.
