Kenmare's Second Chances: From a Locked Shed to a Family Sofa
Bessie is asleep on our couch with our other two dogs as I write this. It is an ordinary sight, but knowing her story makes it extraordinary. Before we fostered her, this wonderful collie had been locked in a shed for 18 hours a day. Now, the stressed, fearful look has disappeared from her eyes. She gets on with everyone, brings us joy and has become a much-valued part of our family. Bessie's transformation shows what KARA, Kenmare Animal Rescue, makes possible. But continuing that work takes money, and funding is urgently needed. A second chance means more than a roof and a bowl of food. It means veterinary treatment, patient care and the opportunity to feel safe again. Among those needing support are Missy, an affectionate three-year-old merle collie who loves her toys, and Rover, a four-year-old collie cross whose elderly owner could no longer care for him. Sally and her seven puppies are being lovingly cared for in their foster home. Numerous cats and kittens, including Peaches and Luna, are in foster homes or Kenmare Cattery. Please donate whatever you can afford. Your kindness helps provide food, veterinary care and somewhere safe for animals who depend on KARA. Donations can be made at the KARA shop at SuperValu, through https://kenmareanimalrescue.ie/donate/ or on https://www.idonate.ie/fundraiser/jillmoffatt.
There is also a lovely way to help through the charity raffle. A unique ceramic artwork by Trevor Woods, valued at €285, has been generously donated by Mill Cove Gallery, Kenmare. It’s sheep, watchful collie and daisies could bring a little countryside into your home while supporting animals in need.
Tickets are €5.00 and are available at Mill Cove Gallery, 21 Main Street, Kenmare, with raffle results announced on 14 December.
Looking at Bessie sleeping peacefully, we know what this support can mean. Please donate, buy a ticket or share the appeal. Together, we can help more animals leave fear behind and find their own place on the couch.
